Weight Loss? Better to Focus on Weight Control

Weight loss is a topic on many people's minds these days. Unfortunately, many people have real trouble controlling their weight. It certainly is not easy to lose weight consistently and sustainably. It's quite easy to do a crash diet and lose quite a lot of weight in a short space of time - the trouble is, it's very hard to maintain the new regime and most people end up putting the weight back on again. Then you get discouraged with the whole idea, and maybe end up comfort eating, which feeds back into the vicious circle. And so on.

It certainly isn't easy to lose weight, but there are a couple of simple tips that can really help you along the way. Most people are unaware of these points, but they are very powerful and can really help you in your weight control efforts.

Tip # 1: Forget about weight 'loss'. There is lots of information, both online and offline, offering advice on how to 'lose' weight. The trouble with that is, by focusing on 'losing' weight, you're setting yourself up psychologically to put it back on again. Think about it. If you lose your house keys, what do you do? You do everything in your power to find them again, as quickly as possible. The concept of losing is associated with wanting to find what was lost. So, if you think constantly about losing weight, you're unconsciously setting yourself up to 'find' it again. Instead of 'weight loss', focus on 'weight control'.

Tip # 2: If you have scales for weighing yourself, throw them away. The worst thing that can happen is, you start your new diet regime, and start taking mild exercise, and everything is going well, you weigh yourself every morning and find you are steadily losing the pounds. One day, you find you have put a pound back on. This is the single most demotivating thing that can happen, and can seriously set you back in your weight control efforts. I can't emphasize this strongly enough: do yourself a favor and throw your scales away, or put them up in the attic where you won't be tempted to use them. Far better: judge your weight control progress by how good you look in the mirror, or how good you feel inside yourself.

Finally, weight control is not easy, and anyone who claims it is easy is not helping you. But the key is steady, regular, small losses which are sustainable and will not be quickly put back on again.
